Osteoporosis refers to a health condition where bone density is weak and fragile, more likely to break. Osteoporosis is very common amongst middle-aged women, and the main cause is decrease in the production of estrogen, the female hormones in the ovaries. According to the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF), more than 200 million people currently suffer from osteoporosis. And from a publication in the European Journal of Rheumatology (EJR), one in three women and one in five men at over 50 years of age will experience osteoporosis during their lifetime. The IOF president advised that prevention is the key to osteoporosis and people whom with risk factors should see a doctor and to be tested. A recent study published in the Journal of Menopausal Medicine suggests that alkaline water may have a positive effect on the bone density in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis. 100 women with postmenopausal osteoporosis were divided into two groups: a group with daily calcium D, alkaline water, and osteopos tablet; and another alkaline water excluded. The result showed that the group with alkaline water significantly improved bone density scores and has mentioned alkaline water could be helpful for postmenopausal women with osteoporosis in the future.
Besides drinking alkaline water, consuming both calcium-rich foods such as dairy products, greens, tofu, anchovies, and seaweeds 2 or 3 times daily may improve osteoporosis. According to a study of postmenopausal women in the urban area of Shanghai, China, soy protein intake had a positive effects on estrogen reducing and fractures factors. Reducing sodium-intake could prevent osteoporosis condition, because sodium-intake causes lots of calcium to be excreted in the urine. Especially diabetes patients should be aware of sodium intakes due to sodium promotes potassium excretion which helps insulin secretion. A 30 minute walk is also a good way to prevent muscle loss because of aging.
