60-70% of our body consists of water. Water maintains body temperature, helps joints and helps to flush out waste products from the body. Water helps with food intake, prevents dehydration, and helps many organs. The World Health Organization recommends 1.5 to 2 liters of water a day, but it is rare for people to consume water in the right amount.
A lack of water in the body causes problems with the body's metabolism. Indigestion or constipation may persist, and it promotes skin aging. When the skin becomes dry, it loses elasticity and wrinkles appear. According to a study conducted by the Human Performance Laboratory at the University of Connecticut, the United States, published in the Journal of Nutrition, even a small change in water in the body can change mood, vitality, and mental function. The research team divided into male and female groups and measured cognitive ability, concentration, and reaction speed when body water was in a normal state and when it was insufficient. As a result of the experiment, when there was a lack of water, headache, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and memory loss were found. These symptoms were the same even if the participants sweated for 40 minutes on the treadmill and became dehydrated after exercising.
Chronic dehydration refers to a condition in which body water is insufficient by 2% or more. Immune ability is also lowered, and there is a high possibility of contracting various diseases. A common symptom of chronic dehydration is chronic fatigue. If the body lacks water, the body cannot produce energy normally, resulting in fatigue. In particular, if the days of fatigue last for a week, the skin becomes rough.
A caffeinated beverage you enjoy all the time increases blood flow to your heart, which causes your body to excrete more urine. However, caffeinated beverages, such as coffee and tea, can also provide hydration. Considering its potential diuretic properties, it is recommended to drink a glass of water when drinking caffeinated beverages. When drinking water, it is best to drink small amounts frequently. Ideally, you should drink plenty of water and stay hydrated throughout the day. If you drink water all at once, you will urinate more than if you drink water slowly because of the electrolyte changes that occur. Staying hydrated is important, but you don't need to drink more than recommended. It is also good to eat fruits and vegetables that contain a lot of water.
