Stress and Anxiety

Recently, as anxiety and restrictions on outdoor activities due to the delta coronavirus have increased, more people are struggling with insomnia and stress, and interest in melatonin as a solution is increasing. Melatonin is a hormone in the brain that controls sleep, and when exposed to light in the morning, the secretion of melatonin is suppressed and the brain wakes up. Conversely, in the evening when there are no light, secretion increases and it is involved in sleep. Melatonin neutralizes free radicals, detoxifies, prevents obesity, and fights cancer cells. Melatonin plays an important role in our body, but above all, it contributes a lot to immunity. Melatonin is produced naturally in the body, but when the pineal gland, which secretes melatonin, declines, the secretion of melatonin decreases, and insomnia increases.

Melatonin and Immunity

According to the journal recently published in Life Science, acute respiratory failure in clinical trials is related to a decrease in immunity to COVID. The Cleveland Clinic Runner Lab team in the United States conducted an experiment in which melatonin was administered after infecting human epithelial cells with the Corona 19 virus. As a result, it reduces the number and function of NK cells that play an important role in immunity and reduces the number of CD4+ T cells that play an immune function. Melatonin, an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant molecule, not only protects ALI (Acute Lung Injury) and ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome) caused by viruses but also has high vascular permeability and is positive for critically ill coronavirus patients by improving anxiety, sedative use, and sleep quality. is known to be effective. Although melatonin is not a direct treatment, it can affect virus-related diseases through indirect effects of anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immune enhancement.

Natural Remedies such as Cherries

Cherry is a representative fruit containing melatonin. The melatonin content of cherries is 50 times that of garlic and 30 times that of broccoli. A cup of cherries, 140g, contains about 10mg of melatonin. Although the amount of melatonin absorbed may vary from person to person, eating just one cup of fresh cherries in summer may help a good night's sleep. According to the University of Texas Health Science Center, the melatonin content of Momorangsi tart cherry is about 13.46ng/g, which is more than 6 times higher than that of other varieties.

Stop Watching YouTube and Sleep

Melatonin is sensitive to light, so even when our body is exposed to a small stand, its secretion is reduced. Melatonin detects the photoperiod and regulates the body's circadian rhythm, and also plays a role in suppressing the secretion of gonadotropin. If you sleep late with the lights on, your body clock malfunctions, and the production of melatonin gradually decreases, which can lead to insomnia. It is recommended to block the surrounding light as much as possible before sleep. Not only lighting but stay away from the cell phone.
